Thinking of Leaving Tech? Read This First.
The market is oversaturated and landing a role is taking longer for everyone, not just in tech.
It doesn’t matter if the data says the tech job market is improving, because for millions of job seekers, it doesn’t feel that way.
It’s not just tech facing a hard market though. From cashiers to teachers, designers to software engineers, professionals across industries are struggling.
There are plenty of reasons why the job market is rough, but it’s best to focus on what you can control. Start by understanding why your specific industry or role is being impacted then use that insight to help you figure out your next move.
Some things are out of your control, like the economy, politics, or return-to-office policies. Others are within your control, like learning new skills, being open to non-remote roles, or networking in-person and online with intention.
I know that something being in your control doesn’t mean it’s easy, but it’s a realistic picture of how you might need to adapt. For example:
You don’t want to go back to an office, but over 70% of tech jobs are hybrid or on-site.
You’re not interested in AI or up skilling, but over 70% of U.S. companies are already using or exploring it.
You don’t want to leave the house and meet strangers, but over 50% of jobs are filled through networking and referrals.
You only want to work in Big Tech, but you're 10 to 20x’s more likely to land a role at a smaller tech company or any company that is hiring technical talent.
So should you leave tech? No.
Use data to guide your next move, and pivot based on what the market is actually asking for while staying aligned with your skills and goals.
